The Finnish Museum of Natural History (Luomus; http://www.luomus.fi/) is an independent institute of the University of Helsinki. We are responsible for preservation, procurement and exhibition of national natural history collections, as well as research and education relating to them.

Luomus has extensive, constantly growing library of digital species information data. It is managed with information systems that have been developed in-house. They are used for building a national information infrastructure, the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility (FinBIF; https://laji.fi/) used for research, environmental and natural resources management, education, civil society and business. Luomus is responsible for the development and administration of FinBIF.

Luomus is looking to hire a

FRONT-END DEVELOPER

for a fixed-term contract from Aug 1st 2018 to Dec 31st 2019 (or as agreed) to develop front-end services for FinBIF.

FinBIF is a set of services administered by the Finnish Museum of Natural History. It compiles digital species information from several different organisations into a data warehouse, where it is standardised and shared for open use as widely as permitted by law. FinBIF connects to services of other Finnish organisations that use species information, as well as comprable international projects. In 2019 FinBIF will expand as a part of Finvasive Life project collecting data on invasive alien species.

The developer will, as a part of the ICT Team, develop front-end software components for FinBIF, and be involved in usability design. We require a strong command of frontend development techniques (JS, TypeScript, CSS, HTTP, REST, JSON etc). A knowledge of Angular 2+, React, ES6, Leaflet and Bootstrap libraries is especially helpful. While we are seeking a frontend developer, the most important backend techniques used are NodeJS and Java.

We need a developer who both knows the normal methods of software development (agile approach, automated testing) and is also interested in the functionality from the end user’s point of view. Being familiar with species information is a plus.

We offer an opportunity to participate in an interesting, socially significant venture that provides an opportunity to apply and develop your skills independently. The pay is based on the salary system of Finnish universities, for other (i.e. non-teaching or research) staff, at grade 8 or 9. The final job description as well as the pay grade is determined by the skills of the selected person. In addition a personal pay component is paid. This translates to a starting salary of 2700 – 3500 Euro per month. The post is located in Helsinki, and the posting starts with a three-month trial period.

Part of the components being developed are open-source and can be viewed at https://bitbucket.org/luomus/suomen-lajitietokeskus-finbif

Please submit your application, CV and other possible documents that may affect selection, as a single pdf file through the University of Helsinki electronic recruitment system.

Internal applicants (i.e., current employees of the University of Helsinki) must submit their applications through the SAP HR portal. Apply at the latest on 10 June 2018.

For more information on the position and the salary, contact the Luomus IT Manager Dare Talvitie (dare.talvitie@helsinki.fi; +358 50 415 4849; email preferred) or IT Specialist Esko Piirainen (esko.piirainen@helsinki.fi)
